Over the last few months we’ve being running a survey to find out what you prefer in the battle between Active 3D and Passive 3D. The votes have all been counted (more than 300 of them!) and the results are here, who won in our battle between active and passive 3D?

To be honest it had been extremely close all the way along until the last month but I would say that for certainly the first 6 weeks Active 3D had the edge. However this hasn’t lasted and the final result shows passive 3D with 49% of the votes (149), active 3D with 35% (106) and people who couldn’t see any difference accounting for the other 16% (48).

Why Do People Prefer Passive 3D?
I’m going to offer up a guess here and say that I think LG’s latest range of passive Cinema 3D TVs may have something to do with it. Google Penguin Update – 301 Redirect?

How is your traffic doing after Google’s Penguin update (April 24th 2012)? If you’re anything like me you are suffering quite badly. A lot of the websites I’ve built in the last 2-3 years have been hit hard of by this update regardless of content quality or promotion techniques used. A couple of those sites I was very proud off and even worse it seems that one in particular was negatively impacted by the actions of somebody else linking to it…brilliant. Then there is MoneySchemes.net, which for reasons of not being a moron I tend not to promote using any of the systems and tools I write about on it. Yet if you are reading this via a web search you are probably one of only around 30 people to do so today, where as before the 24th this site receieved hundreds of visitors a day. Why wouldn’t it? It’s all unique content, written by somebody who knows what they are talking about (most of the time!) and a lot of people find it quite useful. It’s not hooked up in any quick fix link systems (not be me anyway) so why would it get hammered? I guess sometimes it’s more about the subject of your writing than the quality of it.

BUT anyway, on to the real subject of this post. What to do with your websites that were badly affected by the Penguin update?

Right now I wish I had a pound for every webmaster who had suggested this to me, each thinking they were being devilishly fiendish! What you need to do is buy another domain, copy your affected website to it and then 301 redirect the old domain. IT’S BRILLIANT! How can this not work? The UK Governments recent announcement of a top rate of tax of 50% for anybody earning over £150,000 a year is sure to cause strong feelings amongst the contractor community. Could a move that the bureaucrats see as raising tax revenue actually result in a reduction as a steady flow of high earners and their associated businesses are moved out of the UK?

The offshore islands that surround the UK have long looked to attract these sort of high earners and this could be the push that many need. Where is the incentive of working when half your money is taken at source? Top amongst the offshores targeting these individuals is the Isle of Man. Having a top rate of tax of only 18% may well be incentive enough for many entrepreneurs/contractors/business owners to consider the Isle of Man an attractive proposition. But when you also take into account a tax cap that limits an individual from paying more than £100,000 in personal income tax it suddenly becomes very attractive to the very rich. Besides the financial reasons the offshores offer much to the UK resident looking for an escape from Gordon Browns hatred of private business. Not least being a level of safety and quality of life that far surpasses anywhere in the mainland UK.

–NOTE– I’ve just updated my version of the commentLuv plugin, it looks like the later versions comply with how WordPress handles nofollow by default, i.e. unless the blog owner is running a DoFollow plugin then these links are not followed. There is still some value in using this, most blog owners don’t like spammy keyword rich “user names” associated with comments, at least this way you can use whatever link text you like.

I don’t think there is a SEO’er out there who doesn’t appreciate the benefit that leaving comments on blogs can bring. WordPress in particular gives you a very easy way of getting a 1-way link back to whichever website you specify in the comment form. The major problem with this is that these links are nofollowed by default, in other words Google won’t count them. There are a number of WP plug-ins designed to bypass this and reward your commentators with a followed link, one of the best (and one I’ve been using since it was first written) is CommentLuv. The CommentLuv plugin works by looking for an RSS feed associated with the domain you specify in the comment form, it then creates a followed link to the top entry in that feed. If you’re the sort of person that only creates blogs then commenting on blogs that use the CommentLuv plugin is a perfect way of building your link profile. My problem is this, most of my main money makers are not blogs, they are static websites. Where there’s a will there’s usually a way though. This is a trick I’ve been using for a while to get the CommentLuv links back to my static websites and it’s one I’m going to share with you now.
